En route to Atlanta

We made it to Georgia! We had a rather uneventful trip, other than being patted down at 30 weeks pregnant by security in the Chicago airport. They were thorough too. I don't know - is it just me or does it seem pretty unlikely that I would be a suicide bomber?

On another note, Matt was really excited that he didn't immediately fall asleep as the plane took off today. He said it is the first time in his life that he has stayed awake during takeoff. For those that have always wondered if Matt is mildly narcoleptic, the answer is yes! He was clinically diagnosed last week, and began taking a drug for it, called Provigil, last weekend. He loves it so far, and he is able to stay awake in situations that he never has before (i.e. class, church, driving any distance in the car, being on a plane, etc.) Oh, and the side effect of this drug? Weight loss.

Happy Monday!

Happy Monday everyone! I am excited because tomorrow Matt and I are flying to GEORGIA!! Yay! I am so ready for warm weather! This weekend in Evanston it didn't get any warmer than about 55 degrees...in JUNE! I left the house Saturday in jeans, a sweater, and a jacket. I couldn't bear to get out my wool socks once again though, so I decided on flip flops, thinking how cold can it really be outside in June. My feet FROZE!!! I know I should be thankful I am not in sweltering summer heat when I am pregnant!

On a side note, several people have mentioned that they didn't realize they could read all of my old posts. I have it set to only display 6 posts at a time on the home page so that it doesn't take forever for the page to load...but I've written about 25 posts now, so go back and read them! I created arrows at the bottom to help you see how to scroll through older posts.

My Husband the Chef

If you didn't know, Matt is an absolutely FABULOUS cook. He loves being creative and coming up with new ideas in the kitchen, and he is seriously good at it. We get Cooks Illustrated, Bon Appetit, and Food and Wine, and he watches Iron Chef and America's Test Kitchen religiously, so this is where a lot of his ideas come from. Last week, he mentioned a book that he really wanted to read called Ratio, by Michael Ruhlman. He'd read an article about it that intrigued him. The basic idea is that all foods are based on a ratio of flour, fats, sugar, liquids, etc. Once you learn the basic ratios for foods, you can cook based on proportions instead of following ingredient lists.

To celebrate Matt finishing his last class of the year, I got him this book last Thursday. He started reading it right away, and decided to make dinner last night using some of the principles in this book.  He made a pasta dish using homemade noodles, italian sausage, artichokes, fennel, and edamame, and a sauce he invented. It was incredible!

Today he tried the ratio method to make cookies. He made shortbread cookies, pecan shortbread cookies, almond shortbread cookies, and lime poppyseed cookies! They were all delish!

I feel so lucky that my wonderful husband likes to cook for me and he is so good at it!!!

D-Day

Matt's former boss, Tom Beaty, of Insight Sourcing Group in Atlanta was featured on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric this week! In his spare time he runs a website called Witness To War, which captures the war stories of vets in their own words. He has interviewed 200 vets so far. With the 65th anniversary of D-Day today, they featured him on this video. Check it out!

29 Week Ultrasound

Today I went for my 29 week ultrasound! Everything looks good but this baby is huge! He weighs 4 pounds and 2 ounces, give or take 11 ounces. He is in the 86th percentile as far as his weight goes, and he is measuring 2 weeks ahead of schedule. Apparently he is still within the "normal" range for babies of diabetic mothers. My doctor isn't going to change my due date (August 20th) at this point, but I have a feeling this baby will be coming early!

Crib

Our crib has arrived! We ordered a Young America crib by Stanley from my parent's store and it came yesterday! Matt didn't get home from his Thursday night class until after 10pm, but for some reason had a surge of energy and really wanted to open it up and start putting it together! I didn't object! It only took him a couple of hours, and I snapped a few pictures of him while he worked! We haven't changed anything in the guest room so far, but hopefully this weekend we can start moving some of the furniture around so it will look more like a nursery!
